Java Developer for Digital Scientific Infrastructures (m/f/d)

to join the Lab Group Open Research Information at the earliest possible opportunity.

The Lab Group Open Research Information of the TIB aims to make information about research activities interoperable, findable, reusable and accessible in open infrastructures. It promotes the development towards digital, open and collaborative science and supports scientific institutions and communities by working with them to develop and test methods and software tools that are useful for research activities. We are looking for a communicative and entrepreneurial person with a strong technical background to expand the Open Science Lab's ( OSL ) activities in the field of open research information and bibliographic metadata.

Your work will focus on the design, development and operation of a service for bibliographic metadata on literature translations based on the open source software VIVO as part of the project “ Translation Rights – Historical database on the translation market for German-language literature and literature in German“ funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The database will serve as a knowledge graph being used by Digital Humanities researchers for quantitative and qualitative research.

Aufgaben

  • Your tasks include
  • Conception, development and deployment of workflows for the import of metadata from service like the catalogue of the German National Library, the Gemeinsame Normdatei (GND) or Wikidata into a VIVO based knowledge graph.
  • Further development, installation and maintenance of (open source) software such as Vitro or VIVO.
  • Customisation of user interfaces in VIVO, taking into account user requirements.
  • Communication with key stakeholders in the project and in relevant specialist communities (literature sciences, VIVO community).
  • Documentation of the development activities.

Fähigkeiten

  • You have a completed scientific university degree (Master’s degree / university diploma), preferably in computer science, mathematics, information science or a related relevant scientific-technical field.
  • or
  • Alternatively you have a completed relevant university degree (Bachelor’s degree or university of applied sciences diploma) in one of the above-mentioned fields, combined with at least five years of relevant professional experience in the advertised area of work (e.g. software development, research information systems, digital humanities, research-related IT projects).
  • Experience in software development in the environment of web-based applications (Java, JavaScript).
  • Knowledge of semantic web/linked data technologies (RDF, SPARQL) and metadata handling via APIs such as Search/Retrieve via URL (SRU).
  • Experience in working on Linux VMs.
  • Experience in working with version control systems such as Git.
  • High degree of self-organisation and independent working skills.
  • Very good written and spoken English skills.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and languages.
  • Interest in digital scholarly infrastructures and digital humanities.
  • Desirable additions to your profile
  • Experience in working with legacy code bases in a global open-source project.
  • Good written and spoken German skills.
  • Interest in working in a research and library environment.
  • Willingness to participate in interdisciplinary, national and global (open source) communities.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD workflows based on technologies such as Ansible and Docker.
